York Park and Ride buses run more often from Sunday 8 November, Sundays included, ahead of the Christmas Market. New frequencies for all six sites, and the £4 return.
York’s Park and Ride buses will run more often from Sunday 8 November, four days before the Christmas Market opens. First Bus, which runs the network with City of York Council, announced the new timetables on Tuesday.
The extra buses run on Sundays too. They also run on Tuesdays, when the Christmas Market is shut for the first time this year.
How often each route runs
| Service | Park and Ride site | A bus every |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | Rawcliffe Bar | 8 to 10 minutes |
| 3 | Askham Bar | 8 to 15 minutes |
| 7 | Designer Outlet | 7 to 10 minutes |
| 8 | Grimston Bar | 8 to 13 minutes |
| 9 | Monks Cross | 10 to 15 minutes |
| 59 | Poppleton Bar | 13 to 17 minutes |
First Bus says the timetables have also been adjusted for reliability, modelled on how many people travelled last Christmas.
Times and fares
All six sites open from 5.30am to 10.45pm, and parking is free. A standard adult return costs £4.00. Up to three children aged 16 and under travel free with an adult paying that fare.
Full timetables are on iTravelYork.
Steve Moyle, General Manager of First Bus in York, said the extra services were meant to “reduce car traffic into the city centre, which will benefit everyone”.
Councillor Kate Ravilious, the council’s Executive Member for Transport, said: “We’re looking forward to what could be a record-breaking Christmas period and now with greater frequency, passengers will never have to wait long for the next Park and Ride.”
What it means for you
- Going to the market: it runs from Thursday 12 November to Monday 21 December, closed on Tuesdays. Parking in a city car park all day costs far more than the £4 return; our parking in York page has the council’s charges.
- Shortest waits: the shortest gaps are on the Designer Outlet and Rawcliffe Bar routes, at 7 to 10 and 8 to 10 minutes.
- Christmas and New Year: what runs on the holidays themselves is on our York Christmas trains and buses page.
