The A1237 closes between Wigginton Road and Strensall Road every night until 6am on Saturday. A64 slip roads at Askham Bryan and Fulford shut overnight too.

Driving in York runs on a short list of pinch points: the bridges over the Ouse, the radial roads in through Bishopthorpe Road, Acomb and Clifton, and the A1237 outer ring road that everything falls back on. This page covers what is actually closed in September 2026, the state of the big schemes, and the evergreen answers, park and ride, station parking and the footstreets, that decide how you should come into the city at all.

Closed or restricted right now

Everything below is taken from the council’s temporary road closures register and its own works notices.

A1237 outer ring road: five nights from 21 September

The biggest closure now on the register, and the one that will reroute the most traffic. The A1237 closes in both directions between the Wigginton Road roundabout and the Strensall Road roundabout, 8.00pm to 6.00am, for up to five nights from Monday 21 September, finishing at 6.00am on Saturday 26 September. The road reopens each morning, weather permitting. Haxby Road carries the same closure times (City of York Council, 11 September 2026).

The work is highway maintenance on the approach to the Haxby roundabout, by Lane Rentals Services.

  • The signed diversion runs Malton Road, Heworth Green, Lord Mayors Walk, Gillygate, Bootham and the A19, back to the A1237. That is a long way round through the middle of the city, so allow for it.
  • New Earswick and properties on Haxby Road get local diversions via Wigginton Road.
  • Connecting roads off both roundabouts stay open for local access.
  • Cyclists and pedestrians can still use the existing underpass, and the off-road route between Wigginton Road and Haxby Road stays open. The signed cycle diversion runs Haxby Road, Hawthorn Terrace, Link Road, Huntington Road and Strensall Road.
  • Buses are not affected, and bin collections run as normal.

Cllr Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for Transport, said Haxby roundabout is “the latest in a long list of works” and that the council is “working overnight, reopening the road each morning, to reduce the impact on local residents”.

A64 slip roads: overnight closures around the southern bypass

National Highways is closing slip roads on the A64 for cleaning and maintenance, 8.00pm to 6.00am each night. The main carriageway stays open. Its seven-day closure report lists (National Highways, report for 16 to 22 September 2026):

Bondhill is the A19 junction by the Designer Outlet. On the Friday and the Monday, drivers heading for the Outlet or Fulford late in the evening should expect to come off at the next junction and double back.

Monday 21 September is the one to plan around. The A64 westbound slips at Fulford and Bondhill close on the same night the A1237 shuts on the other side of the city, and both signed diversions lean on the ring road.

Station Road: the night closures are over

The two overnight closures of Station Road, on 14 and 15 September, have ended and the road is open. They were for drainage at the crossing outside the station portico (City of York Council, 4 September 2026).

What is left of Station Gateway should not stop traffic:

  • Night of Monday 21 September: weather permitting, a night shift paints cycleway markings by Left Luggage and near the station. The council says this runs under local traffic management “with no restrictions in place”.
  • Cycle lanes: the council is “aiming to open by early October”, once signs go up. The routes near the substation will open later.
  • Fencing and planting: most fencing comes down once the cycle lanes open, and more planting goes in during October.

A1079 Hull Road: final phase, nightly to 21 September

The month’s longest-running closure is in its last phase. Around three miles of the A1079 between Dunnington and the city boundary at Kexby Bridge are being resurfaced overnight, 8pm to 6am, and the road reopens each morning (City of York Council, 4 September 2026).

The first two phases are done. Phase 3 runs from 8pm on Sunday 13 September through to 6am on Monday 21 September, eight nights, closing the stretch from the Common Lane junction to Kexby Bridge, with the closure point at Long Lane.

The diversion is the long way round: A64, A19, A63 and A614, rejoining the A1079 at Shiptonthorpe. The council says it has to signpost a route able to carry the lorries the A1079 normally takes, and that cyclists should follow the same route because there is no suitable night-time alternative. Buses are unaffected: the X46 and X47 run their usual timetable and are escorted through. Street parking is suspended in the working area each night.

One thing to watch. The council’s works programme runs the final phase to 6am on Monday 21 September, but the traffic order on the closures register still expires at 6am on Saturday 19 September. That gap between two council documents has not closed since we first reported it. Detail is in our A1079 closure story.

Back Swinegate and Little Stonegate: resurfacing until 25 October

Both close for highway resurfacing until 5.00pm on Sunday 25 October. That is seven weeks in the middle of the Swinegate quarter, and it is still the longest city centre works order on the register.

Beckfield Lane is finished

The Acomb resurfacing that ran from 17 August ended on schedule at 3.30pm on Tuesday 8 September and the road is open as normal. Bin collections are back on the usual Friday round. Background is in our Beckfield Lane closure story.

City centre: the next royal salute closure is 14 November

Twelve city centre streets close 11.00am to 12.40pm for royal salutes. The September date has passed; the next is Saturday 14 November. The register lists Blake Street, Coney Street, Dame Judi Dench Walk, Davygate, Duncombe Place, High Ousegate, Lendal, Museum Gardens, Museum Street, Parliament Street, Spurriergate and St Helen’s Square.

Most of those are inside the footstreets and shut to traffic at that hour anyway. Lendal, Museum Street and Duncombe Place are not, so the Lendal Bridge approach is the one to plan around late morning.

Landsdowne Terrace, Tamworth Road, Landing Lane in Haxby, the overnight telecoms closure of North Lane in Huntington, Queen Street and Tower Street were all on this list on 13 September. Every one of those orders has now expired and the roads are open.

Running for months

  • Leeman Road, three overlapping orders for York Central and the National Railway Museum, the earliest running to 8 January 2027 and the latest to November 2027. This corridor is going to be in flux for over a year, which is a planning story as much as a traffic one.
  • Claremont Terrace back lane, structural wall repair, to 2 October.
  • Piccadilly, building development, to 31 October.
  • Monks Cross Link, housing development, two overlapping orders running to 6 and 27 November.
  • Back Lane, Dennis Street, development, to 21 January 2027.
  • Mill Street, building development, to 1 March 2027.
  • Moor Lane, Copmanthorpe, housing development, to 26 March 2027.
  • National Cycle Network Route 65 at Clifton Ings, flood defence work, to 10 January 2027.

The register also carries a long list of standing event orders, mainly for racing at York Racecourse and for Upper Poppleton village events, which only bite on the day.

The big schemes: one finishing, one phased, one shelved

Station Gateway is nearly done, with a two-night tail. The remodelling of the road layout outside the station ran its final four-week programme of night works from 1 June 2026, Station Road has been resurfaced in its final layout, and the new crossings include a pedestrian countdown timer, the first in York (council update). The portico crossing drainage was done on the nights of 14 and 15 September. The council now aims to open the cycle lanes by early October. What has not returned is the station long-stay car park, closed since March 2025 while Network Rail builds a multi-storey in its place; blue badge parking stays in the short-stay car park and trains are unaffected (Network Rail, council transport update). Commuters are pointed at the APCOA car park on Leeman Road and council car parks in the meantime.

The A1237 outer ring road dualling is now phased, with a funding gap. The scheme would dual the northern ring road from the A19 at Shipton Road round to Little Hopgrove, enlarging the Clifton Moor, Haxby Road, Monks Cross, Strensall Road and Wigginton Road roundabouts and bridging the Scarborough railway line and the River Foss. The council’s current position, set by its Executive on 15 July 2025, is a phased delivery: the full scheme is costed at £163.5 million against £52.4 million of available funding, a £111.1 million shortfall, and construction is expected to take about two years once it starts. No start date or completion year is published (City of York Council).

The A64 Hopgrove dualling is shelved. National Highways’ scheme to dual the A64 from Hopgrove towards Barton-le-Willows was left out of the Government’s five-year Road Investment Strategy in March 2026, with the agency concluding its options were “high in cost and assessed as having low value for money” (This is the Coast, 26 March 2026). Day to day, the A64 main carriageway is open. The only York-area entries in National Highways’ closure report for 16 to 22 September 2026 are the overnight slip road closures at Askham Bryan, Bondhill and Fulford listed above (National Highways).

Park and ride: usually the right answer

York’s answer to its own traffic is one of the biggest park and ride networks in the country: six sites ring the city, all run by First Bus York for the council (iTravel York).

The sites and their buses: Askham Bar (Service 3) on Tadcaster Road, Designer Outlet (7) by the A64 to the south, Grimston Bar (8) on the A1079, Monks Cross (9) to the north-east, Poppleton Bar (59) on the A59 and Rawcliffe Bar (2A) on the A19 north. First buses leave each site at about 05:30 Monday to Saturday (07:30 Sundays) and the last bus back from the city centre goes at about 22:30; there is no service on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day (iTravel York).

Fares are the strongest argument (iTravel York fares): a standard return is £4.00, a child return £2.00, and up to three children aged 16 or under travel free with an adult. Concessionary pass holders pay £1.40 return (after 9am on weekdays, any time at weekends). Regulars can cut it further with a £18 five-day carnet, £16 weekly, £64 monthly or £640 annual smart ticket. Compare that with a day’s city-centre parking and the sums rarely favour driving in.

Driving into the centre: know the footstreets

Even with the roadworks clear, the historic core is not driveable in the daytime. York’s footstreets scheme closes the main shopping streets, from Blake Street and Davygate through Coney Street, Parliament Street and Goodramgate, to vehicles between 10.30am and 5.00pm, seven days a week, and Shambles and Stonegate are closed to general traffic at all times (City of York Council). Blue Badge holders can have the barriers opened at Goodramgate and Blake Street during those hours, and Castlegate also carries a Blue Badge exemption.

What it means for you

  • Using the A64 late in the evening: slip roads close 8pm to 6am at Askham Bryan westbound (17 September), Bondhill eastbound (18 September), Fulford and Bondhill westbound (21 September) and Fulford eastbound (22 September). Allow for coming off a junction later and doubling back.
  • Using the northern ring road after 8pm from 21 September: the A1237 is shut between Wigginton Road and Strensall Road for up to five nights. The signed way round goes through the city on Malton Road, Heworth Green, Lord Mayors Walk, Gillygate and Bootham, so leave extra time or travel before 8pm.
  • Driving east after 8pm: the A1079 is shut between Common Lane and Kexby Bridge every night to 21 September. The signed way round is the A64, A19, A63 and A614. Travel before 8pm or after 6am and nothing changes.
  • Haxby and New Earswick: local access off both ring road roundabouts stays open, and the Haxby Road diversion runs via Wigginton Road.
  • The Swinegate quarter: Back Swinegate and Little Stonegate are dug up until 25 October. If you park nearby for a night out, pick somewhere else.
  • The city centre from 14 to 28 September: the register carries a standing closure order for the York Food and Drink Festival, which runs 18 to 27 September.
  • Commuting by train: the station long-stay car park is still closed, so use Leeman Road APCOA, a council car park, or park and ride.
