York city centre has no lights switch-on ceremony. The two dated for 2026: York Minster's free tree lights on 28 November at 10am and Haxby's on 3 December.
There is no Christmas lights switch-on ceremony in York city centre. The city’s festive lights are put up by York BID and simply come on in mid-November, with no countdown, stage or celebrity. The switch-ons that do happen are smaller: York Minster switches on its Christmas Tree Festival on Saturday 28 November 2026 at 10am, and Haxby switches on its village lights on Thursday 3 December 2026.
The quick answer
- City centre: no ceremony. York BID’s lights went up from 14 November in 2024 without one (York BID); nothing has been announced for 2026.
- York Minster: Saturday 28 November, 10am, free, no booking (York Minster).
- Haxby: Thursday 3 December 2026; times not yet published (Haxby Town Council minutes, 7 September 2026).
- Acomb: the Front Street switch-on ran on Saturday 6 December last year; no 2026 date yet.
Why York has no city-centre switch-on
York used to hold a switch-on in the city centre. Make It York cancelled it in 2020 and again in 2021, saying it drew “large crowds over a short period of time”, a decision taken with York BID, and promoted the winter lights scheme online instead (YorkMix, November 2021). It has not come back. YorkMix’s 2025 round-up of switch-ons across York and North Yorkshire lists no city-centre event, only the Minster, Haxby and Acomb (YorkMix).
The lights themselves are York BID’s Winter Lights. In 2024 the BID said they came on from 14 November and ran to February: 175,000 LEDs over more than 50 streets, wreaths and small trees on the Shambles, a giant illuminated Santa’s Postbox in Museum Gardens and a 20ft St Leonard’s Hospice tree (York BID). The BID has not yet published anything about the 2026 lights; its newest Christmas post is the 2025 Nutcracker Trail, which ran from 13 November 2025 to 4 January 2026 (York BID). We will add the 2026 date when it appears.
York Minster: Saturday 28 November
The Minster’s Christmas Tree Festival opens with a lights switch-on at Minster Mash-Up, its service for children and families, at 10am on Saturday 28 November 2026. It lasts 45 minutes, it is free with no tickets and no booking, and families can arrive and leave when they like (York Minster).
It is a short act of worship that marks the start of Advent, not a stage show. For the rest of the Minster’s Christmas, including the tree festival and carol services, see our York Minster at Christmas page.
Haxby: Thursday 3 December
Haxby Town Council’s Events Committee resolved on 7 September 2026 that “this year’s Christmas lights switch on event will be held on 3 December 2026”, and authorised the clerk to make “the usual/traditional bookings” (Haxby Town Council). The council has not yet published the times or the line-up.
Last year’s event, as listed by YorkMix, started at 6pm at Haxby Memorial Hall on The Village, with the tree on The Green lit at 6.30pm. The council used Radio YO1 as compere in 2025 and bought four carved wooden trees for the display, according to its committee minutes. Expect a similar evening on 3 December, but check the council’s news page before you go.
Acomb: date not yet announced
Acomb’s switch-on takes place on Front Street, by the tree outside the Gateway Centre. Last year it was on Saturday 6 December, 2pm to 4pm, according to YorkMix’s listing. We have not found a 2026 date from the organisers; this page will be updated when one is published.
Other Christmas openings in York
If you want the moment York “turns on” for Christmas, the nearest thing is the week the big attractions open:
- York Christmas Market opens on Thursday 12 November and shuts every Tuesday (our market page).
- Both ice rinks open on Friday 13 November (York ice rinks).
- Castle Howard’s Christmas opens on 12 November (Castle Howard Christmas).
Parking and getting around
The Minster is inside the walls, so for the 28 November switch-on use park and ride or a city car park: prices and times are on our parking in York page, and any closures that week are on roadworks and travel.
