The city and the rest of it
York is a city of about 209,000 people, and only a small part of that lives inside the walls. Our patch is all of it: the city centre and the riverside, Acomb, Clifton, Rawcliffe, Heworth, Osbaldwick, Fulford and Dringhouses, and the villages the council boundary takes in at Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall, Huntington, New Earswick, Dunnington, Wheldrake, Copmanthorpe, Bishopthorpe and Poppleton. A decision about a street in the centre and a decision about a field edge at Strensall come out of the same building, and both belong here.
What we report
Planning above all, because in a city this heavily conserved the planning register is where the arguments are written down first. Alongside it we work from City of York Council’s committee papers and decisions, licensing notices, police.uk crime data, HM Land Registry sold prices, Food Standards Agency hygiene ratings, Environment Agency flood warnings for the Ouse, the Foss and the Derwent, and company filings in The Gazette.
How we work
Every fact is tied to a named source and linked, so you can read the original rather than take our word for it. If a record is unclear, we say it is unclear rather than choosing whichever reading makes the better story. We write in plain British English, we do not run press releases as reporting, and we do not republish other outlets’ photographs.
