St Leonard's Acomb Charity Shop Reopens Friday 28 August

St Leonard’s Hospice reopens its refurbished Acomb clothing shop at 10am on Friday 28 August, after several weeks closed for building work.

The shop is at 9 Regent Buildings on York Road, Acomb, YO26 4LT, and the reopening date and time are confirmed on the hospice’s own shops page. Its telephone number is 01904 788063. The page had said only that the shop was “currently closed for refurbishment until Friday 28 August”.

The hospice has not published a description of what has changed inside the Acomb shop. It has said a good deal about the wider programme the refit belongs to.

What has closed, and where donations go now

Two separate things have happened in Acomb, and it is worth keeping them apart:

• the clothing shop at 9 Regent Buildings reopens on Friday 28 August at 10am
• the Acomb Donation Centre is, in the hospice’s words, “now permanently closed”

If you used to drop donations at the Acomb donation centre, the replacement is the hospice’s Clifton Moor centre at Unit 1/2, Marrtree Business Park, Stirling Road, York YO30 4AB. It is open seven days a week, 10am to 4pm, on 01904 777 755. That is the only one of the charity’s sites open on a Sunday.

The hospice’s furniture shop in Acomb, at 12/14 York Road, has stayed open throughout, Monday to Saturday, 9am to 4.30pm.

The refit programme behind it

St Leonard’s has been refitting its shops one at a time. The last one it described publicly was Colliergate in the city centre, which the charity said would reopen on Friday 13 June at 10am.

Writing about that job, the hospice said the Colliergate shop got contemporary fixtures and fittings, digital screens, a dedicated denim department and a deliberate move away from the traditional charity shop look. It said more than 15 volunteers work there alongside three members of staff.

Jason Lomas, Head of Retail at St Leonard’s, said at the time: “We’re grateful to the community, who have always supported us through our 14 shops in North Yorkshire. Through their shop donations and purchases to our Colliergate shop alone, they raise a staggering £100,000 each year to fund our vital Hospice services.”

He added: “We need to raise around £6 million annually to run the Hospice’s services for our community. We now have 14 charity shops in North Yorkshire which helps us raise these much-needed funds, with one in ten of our patients being cared for thanks to the funds raised through our shops.”

The charity also says that selling pre-loved items across its shops and online offsets 99,268kg of carbon dioxide and keeps 7,364kg of goods out of landfill every week.

What the accounts show

St Leonard’s Hospice York is registered charity number 509294 and company number 01451533, with its registered office at 185 Tadcaster Road, York.

Its most recent published figures, for the year to 31 March 2025, are on the Charity Commission register. They show income of £10,328,000 against expenditure of £10,481,000, so the charity spent about £153,000 more than it took in that year.

Income broke down as:

• other trading activities: £3.77m
• donations and legacies: £3.30m
• charitable activities: £2.53m
• investments: £642,000
• other: £94,000

The register does not separate shop income from the rest of the “other trading activities” line, so the shops’ exact contribution is not published there. The charity employs 215 people and has 460 volunteers and 10 trustees. Its reporting to the Commission is recorded as up to date.

What it means for you

If you have quality clothes, shoes, bags or books to give, the Acomb shop takes donations again from Friday morning. For anything bulky, ring ahead: the hospice asks people donating a large amount to call first so staff are ready, and it warns that bags and boxes cannot always be returned.

St Leonard’s lists 14 shops and a donation centre. Ten of those locations are in York and its villages:

Opening hours are Monday to Saturday, 9am to 4.30pm, at every one of them except Clifton Moor, which also opens on Sundays from 10am to 4pm. The charity’s remaining shops are at Easingwold, Malton, Pocklington and Selby, where it has both a clothing shop and a furniture shop.

The hospice also offers free furniture collections, booked through its website.
