Ten city centre cycle parking sites are replaced through September. St Andrewgate shuts in working hours; the Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate loading bay goes.
Ten cycle parking sites in York city centre are being ripped out and replaced through September, starting on Monday 7 September at High Petergate and Davygate.
If you leave a bike at any of them, you have to move it before the work starts. City of York Council says the stands will be out of action and no cycles or locks can be left there while crews are on site.
Two of the ten come with knock-on disruption for everyone else:
- St Andrewgate closes to traffic during working hours on 16 to 18 September and 21 to 23 September, reopening at the end of each shift.
- The Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate loading bay is suspended from 14 to 17 September.
Work runs from 10.30am to 5pm at every site.
Every site and date
The council has published the full running order. Ten locations across nine streets, because Davygate has two separate sets of stands being done three weeks apart.

No work takes place at weekends at St Andrewgate.
What is being replaced
The council is taking out stands it describes as in poor condition, plus several temporary bolt-down stands, and putting in “Sheffield” stands, the plain hooped type bolted into the ground.
Seven of the sites also gain wider spaces sized for cargo bikes, trikes and adapted cycles: High Petergate, Davygate, Parliament Street, Piccadilly, St Andrewgate, Deangate and King’s Staith. Cumberland Street and Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate are not on that list.
The programme is funded by Active Travel England. Councillor Kate Ravilious, the council’s executive member for transport, said the inclusive parking would “accommodate trikes, cargo and family cycles to name a few, enabling more people to choose to cycle”.
The council says it has written to the nearest residents and businesses, and will put notices on the stands themselves. Timing has been staggered so that some central cycle parking stays open throughout.
What it means for you
If you park a bike in the centre, check the table above and move it the day before your usual spot is due. There is no grace period once crews arrive, and locks left behind will be in the way of the work.
If you drive or take deliveries, the two dates to diary are St Andrewgate on 16 to 18 and 21 to 23 September, and the Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate loading bay on 14 to 17 September.
The dates are not guaranteed. The council warns they may change “due to logistical timescales or other unforeseen circumstances”, and says any revised dates will go on notices at the stand itself and in letters to nearby residents and businesses.
