Three miles of the A1079 close 8pm to 6am from Monday 7 September, with the diversion running via the A64, A19, A63 and A614. Common Road shuts for one full night.

The A1079 closes overnight for 14 nights from Monday 7 September while around three miles of it are resurfaced between Dunnington and the York boundary at Kexby Bridge.

The road shuts at 8pm and reopens at 6am, every night, and the diversion is long. Signed traffic goes the A64, A19, A63 and A614 and rejoins the A1079 at Shiptonthorpe, well south of the works (City of York Council, 4 September 2026).

The three phases

Phase one runs from the York Road junction at Dunnington up to the Common Road junction. It starts at 8pm on Monday 7 September and finishes by 6am on Saturday 12 September.

Phase two is a single night, Saturday 12 September into Sunday 13 September, from the York Road junction to near Kexby Stray, with the closure point at Dauby Lane so traffic can still turn. This is the night the Common Road junction closes completely, reopening at 6am on Sunday 13 September.

Phase three covers the Common Lane junction to the York boundary at Kexby Bridge, with the closure point at Long Lane. It is expected to take eight nights, from 8pm on Sunday 13 September to 6am on Monday 21 September.

One date to keep an eye on

The council’s own temporary road closures list holds the traffic order for this work open only until 6am on Saturday 19 September. The published works programme runs two nights beyond that, to 21 September. The same thing happened on Beckfield Lane last month, where the order expired before the works did and had to be re-advertised, so expect this entry to change.

This is a gap between two council documents published three days apart. The works programme is the later of the two, so treat 21 September as the date to plan around and the order as the thing that needs re-advertising.

What it means for you

  • Driving to or from Hull after 8pm: the diversion is the A64, A19, A63 and A614 to Shiptonthorpe. There is no shorter signed route, because the council has to offer one that can carry the lorries the A1079 normally takes.
  • Cyclists: follow the vehicle diversion. The council says there is no suitable night-time alternative and no continuous footway to walk a bike along.
  • Buses run normally. The X46 and X47 keep their usual timetable and will be escorted through the works.
  • Parking is suspended on the street in and near the working area during each overnight closure.
  • Bins are not affected. Waste and recycling collections run as normal, unlike the Beckfield Lane job. Check your round on our bin collection days page.
  • Walking and property access stay open where there is a footway, and businesses stay open. Emergency services go through at all times.
  • Access problems: speak to the traffic management staff on site, or email highway.maintenance@york.gov.uk.

Councillor Kate Ravilious, Executive Member for Transport, said the council is “working to minimise disruption by carrying out these works on nights and working to reopen the road each morning”, and that letters have gone to local residents and businesses.
