Bettys has poured tea in St Helen's Square since 1937; here are 12 York cafes and coffee shops with hours, prices and hygiene ratings, checked October 2026.
The York cafes most people look for are Bettys in St Helen’s Square, open since 1937; Spring Espresso, with branches on Fossgate and Lendal; Brew & Brownie on Museum Street, trading since 2013; and Partisan on Micklegate, a coffee shop that doubles as a gallery. Every entry was checked on 26 October 2026 against the cafe’s own website, or the FSA register and named listings where a site would not load.
We have not visited these cafes for this guide, and nothing here is a review. Each entry sets out what the cafe says about itself, the hours and prices it publishes, and what the public record adds: the Food Standards Agency hygiene rating, national lists and the history of the building. Eleven of the 12 hold the top hygiene rating of 5; Gatehouse Coffee holds a 4.
Historic rooms
Bettys, St Helen’s Square
Bettys opened in York in 1937. It was the firm’s largest branch, and the room was inspired by the ocean liner RMS Queen Mary. During the Second World War the basement “Bettys Bar” was used by bomber crews stationed around York, and the mirror many of them signed with a diamond pen is still on display (Wikipedia). Afternoon tea is served upstairs in the Belmont Room by reservation only, from £39.95 a person, with children’s, vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free versions (AfternoonTea.co.uk). Bettys’ own site would not load for us on 26 October, so check hours there. Hygiene rating 5 (FSA, 18 June 2025). 6-8 St Helen’s Square, YO1 8QP. Our listing.
The Long Gallery at Grays Court, Chapter House Street
Grays Court is a hotel in a Jacobean house behind the Minster, and its lunch page offers “leisurely lunches all year-round in our historic Jacobean Long Gallery”, with the walled gardens open in warmer months. The light lunch menu is served every day from 12 to 3pm and changes with the seasons, using Yorkshire produce; drinks run from noon into the early evening. The Long Gallery can be booked online or on 01904 612613. The garden is walk-in only. Hygiene rating 5 (FSA, 28 January 2026). Chapter House Street, YO1 7JH. Our listing.
The Perky Peacock, Barker Tower
The Perky Peacock calls itself “a small family owned coffee shop, cafe and bar” in Barker Tower, the round riverside tower at the end of Lendal Bridge, which it says was built in the 14th century to collect a toll from visitors entering the city. It serves coffee, tea, cakes and breakfast rolls (“coffee & bacon butties in the dungeon”, in its words), with wine and cocktails later in the day, and seats outside by the river. Open Monday to Friday 8am to 4pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am to 4pm. The dungeon room is available for private hire. Hygiene rating 5 (FSA, 11 April 2025). Barker Tower, North Street, YO1 6BE. Our listing.
Gatehouse Coffee, Walmgate Bar
Gatehouse Coffee is inside Walmgate Bar, the only one of York’s four main gateways that still has its barbican, the walled outer gate in front of the arch. A travel guide describes seats on the barbican and on a roof terrace, and lists opening as Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm (Away With Maja). Its own site blocked us on 26 October, so confirm the hours there before a trip. Hygiene rating 4 (FSA, 17 July 2026), which means good. Walmgate Bar, Walmgate, YO1 9TL. Our listing.
Independent coffee in the centre
Spring Espresso, Fossgate and Lendal
Spring Espresso promises “artisan coffee from award winning baristas” on its website, with breakfast, brunch and lunch from one all-day menu. It has two cafes: 45 Fossgate (YO1 9TF, 01904 633998) and 21 Lendal, near the Museum Gardens (YO1 8AQ, 01904 633965). Both are open every day from 8am to 4.30pm; the kitchen closes at 3pm on weekdays and 3.30pm at weekends. Click and collect is offered online. The site does not mention table bookings. Both hold hygiene rating 5 (Fossgate, 29 April 2026; Lendal, 1 May 2026). Our listings: Fossgate, Lendal.
Brew & Brownie, Museum Street
Brew & Brownie says it was “established 2013 on Museum Street” and is “a true independent family-run business”, cooking with local ingredients. Demand led it to open The Bakeshop two doors along in 2017 for takeaway or sit-in bakes, made in its own bakery. The website does not publish hours; Creative Tourist lists 9am to 4.30pm on weekdays and to 5pm at weekends, and travel guides say it takes no bookings, so expect a queue at busy times. Hygiene rating 5 for the cafe (FSA, 7 February 2025) and the Bakeshop (FSA, 25 March 2026). 5 Museum Street, YO1 7DT. Our listing.
Little Arras, Goodramgate
Little Arras is the bakery of Arras, the restaurant on Peasholme Green, and it says: “We bake what we like, slow-fermented breads, pastries, cool cakes and nice slices.” Adam has baked Arras’s bread since it opened in 2007, and the bakery grew out of a hole-in-the-wall cafe the owners ran in Sydney. Coffee is from Square Mile, to drink in or as beans to take home. The owner told YorkMix it is “predominantly a retail bakery” with a few seats. Open Tuesday to Saturday, 8am to 3pm. Hygiene rating 5 (FSA, 1 October 2024). 50 Goodramgate, YO1 7LF. Our listing.
Mannion & Co, Blake Street
Mannion & Co is a bistro cafe, deli counter and artisan bakery with branches in York and Helmsley. Its website puts the deli first: charcuterie boards and cheese slates from “a fine selection of charcuterie and cheese from all over Europe”, plus bread, pastries and cakes baked daily, a daily specials board, and the option to eat in or take out. The York hours did not load from its site on 26 October; SquareMeal gives 01904 631030 for bookings. Hygiene rating 5 (FSA, 4 July 2024). 1 Blake Street, YO1 8QJ, just off St Helen’s Square. Our listing.
Micklegate
Partisan, Micklegate
Partisan describes itself as “a vibrant, independent coffee shop, licensed restaurant and arts space on Micklegate”. It serves breakfast, brunch, lunch and afternoon tea every day from a menu that changes with the seasons, with gluten-free and vegan dishes always on it. It shows art on the walls, and pieces can be bought through the staff. Open daily 9am to 3pm. Tables can be booked online or on 01904 629866. Its owners have since opened a sister restaurant, Brancusi. Hygiene rating 5 (FSA, 13 November 2025). 112 Micklegate, YO1 6JX. Our listing.
FortyFive Vinyl Cafe, Micklegate
FortyFive is a cafe, bar and record shop that promises “a small taste of Nashville” on Micklegate, in a “relaxed, dog friendly atmosphere”, with coffee, grilled cheese sandwiches, beer, wine and cocktails, and a jukebox. The racks hold new and used records, from alternative rock to jazz. In the evenings it is a listening room for country and rock music, with a “shhh policy” while acts are playing. Open seven days, 10am to 5pm, but it closes from 5pm to 7pm on live music nights. Hygiene rating 5 (FSA, 6 November 2025). Cromwell House, 29 Micklegate, YO1 6JH. Our listing.
Bishopthorpe Road
The Pig & Pastry, Bishopthorpe Road
Julia and Steve Holding opened the Pig & Pastry in 2008. In 2017 the Guardian put it on its list of the 50 best breakfast places in the UK, the only York entry, praising its regional ingredients and noting the queue that often runs out of the door (YorkMix). We could not find a website for it, and the listings we checked disagree on its hours, so ring ahead on 01904 675115 (the number SquareMeal gives). It was inspected in July 2026 and kept the top rating. Hygiene rating 5 (FSA, 17 July 2026). 35 Bishopthorpe Road, YO23 1NA. Our listing.
Robinsons, Bishopthorpe Road
Robinsons is at the city end of Bishopthorpe Road, a short walk from the Pig & Pastry. In August 2023 YorkMix reported that it had won a Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice award in 2022 and was named in the Sunday Times’ 49 best places to eat that summer, and that it was applying to add 14 outdoor seats. Its planning statement called it “a thriving neighbourhood restaurant” employing 14 local people. Be careful with search results: the robinsonscafe.co.uk address now shows an unrelated betting page, so do not rely on it for hours. Hygiene rating 5 (FSA, 12 December 2025). 7 Bishopthorpe Road, YO23 1NA. Our listing.
How we chose
This is a list of the cafes people search for, chosen on records anyone can check rather than on taste: how long a place has traded, national lists and awards, the building it occupies, and its Food Standards Agency hygiene rating. Nothing rated below 3 was considered, and cafes still awaiting a first inspection were left out. We checked each cafe’s own website on 26 October 2026 for hours, prices and any closure notice; where a site would not load, or there is none, we say so in the entry and name the listing we used instead. Hygiene ratings come from the FSA register on the same day. Hours change, especially in winter, so check before you go.
